Making A Career Changing Move, From HR to Finance

12 Jun 2023

When Harija binti Mohd Salleh was offered an internship in Averis, she bravely took a leap of faith and embarked on this new-found journey that would shape her career. With the guidance from her team lead and fellow colleagues, she learned to adapt in a fast-paced environment and how to multitask, which eventually led her to a full-time role as an Analyst in the Management Accounting team. She is very motivating and if her words can’t encourage you to take control of your ambitions, we don’t know what else can.

Come get to know Harija a little bit more.

  1. Hi there! Tell us about yourself.

I’m a fresh graduate from University of Malaya, where I majored in Economics. I always wanted to get a job that is related to the course I studied, and that’s why I decided to begin my first career journey in Averis. Without any hesitation, I made a brave decision to move away from my family and start work in a new city. With this, I would consider myself an independent person who is responsible for my own career growth.

  1. What is the one interesting fact that people did not know about you?

I enjoy giving back and helping others, and I believe that this experience has made me a more compassionate person.

  1. How has your journey been so far in Averis?

I started as an intern in the HR Department and had the opportunity to pursue my skill and interest as a Trainee in the Finance and Accounting department. I also had the opportunity to support the Corporate Service department as a Compliance Executive for a year, with recognition from the management.  After completing my internship, Averis granted me a permanent job offer in the Finance and Accounting department as an Analyst in the Management Accounting team, under the Finance and Accounting department.

  1. As an intern previously and a permanent staff now, what is the biggest change you have encountered?

As an intern, I frequently worked on several tasks at a time, so I always had multiple items on my to-do list. This became extremely overwhelming, and sometimes, I found it affecting the quality of my work. As time went by, my responsibilities grew significantly, and I got used to the fast-paced culture. Tight deadlines and quick turnaround times pushed me to become more agile and efficient at work and this also enhanced my analytical skills. Guided by my colleagues, I picked up many other skills along the way and was able to quickly adapt to the various situations I faced.

  1. Now that you have experienced being in different departments, do you have any tips for fellow fresh grads when it comes to choosing the right job?

As a fresh graduate, I can say that it’s quite difficult to decide what you should do when job offers come in, especially when they don’t meet your standards or expectations. If you have only a vague idea of what you want to do, consider being adventurous and trying out jobs that may not initially pass off as your dream job. Take up the offer that best suits your present likes and dislikes in a role. This will give you a sense of what your dream job is, and may even give you the time and experience needed to refine your career goals.

  1. What do you think about the company and the team you are working with so far?

I believe that everyone should be given equal opportunities, regardless of their social and education background. This is what Averis offers to all staff – the chance to undertake different projects. In addition to that, my team was an extremely helpful learning aid that allowed me to better develop my communication and professional skills. It taught me how to get my tasks done effectively.

  1. What was the most valuable advice that you received before embarking on this career path?

You can go as far as you want as long as you don’t stop trying – this was the advice that I got during the interview session.

  1. What would you say is your biggest asset?

My self-value, experience, and ability to take new responsibility which I believe can make me a better version of myself. For example, I like to improve my self-value by doing outdoor activities and making sure I get enough sleep and a healthier diet. In terms of ability to work in different teams, I think I’m pretty good at multitasking and I like to stay busy. I also don’t like to say “no.” I feel as though I’m not living up to my potential if I say it. Overall, I’m proud of the person I’ve become, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.

  1. In your opinion, do you think Averis is inclusive when it comes to multiracial celebrations? Tell us why.

Yes. Averis never missed out on celebrating any event to enhance employee engagement, regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs and experiences. Not just that, my team is also made up from different cultures yet we can still work together as one. I’m glad I got to experience a very distinct and supportive culture therefore I would highly recommend Averis as a best multicultural company to work with.
